National Bank of Canada paid a quarterly common share dividend of $1.32 on 1 August, the first payment at the higher rate the bank announced on 27 May.

The increase of eight cents takes the quarterly dividend up from $1.24. Shareholders of record as of 29 June qualified for the payment.

The bank’s board declared the increase for the quarter ending 31 July, alongside its second-quarter results.

Context

The increase came during a round of dividend rises across the Canadian banking sector following second-quarter results in late May. Royal Bank of Canada, Toronto-Dominion Bank and Bank of Nova Scotia each raised their quarterly payments in the same period.

Canadian banks conventionally review their dividends alongside quarterly earnings, and have historically raised them roughly once or twice a year rather than at every review.

Third-quarter results for the sector are scheduled for late August, beginning with Bank of Nova Scotia on 25 August and Royal Bank of Canada on 27 August.
